Corn: 2,800 acres
Corn is harvested as both silage for the CY Heifer Farm and grain. Grain is marketed year-round. Corn grain is marketed through local cooperatives and elevators, and used for the production of ethanol and as feed.
Soybean: 500 acres
CY's soybean crop is marketed through local cooperatives and grain elevators and used as feed and for biofuel.
Wheat: 650 acres
CY grows red winter wheat varieties. Much of it gets made into flour or used as feed. Straw is baled and used in heifer rations.
Alfalfa: 1,000 acres
Alfalfa/grass mixtures are grown to feed the 3,600 heifers at CY Heifer Farm. We start harvest around Memorial Day and can usually get four cuttings here in WNY.
Cabbage: 175 acres
We grow both red and green cabbage varieties that are suitable for fresh market or storage. Cabbage is our most labor intensive crop, as it is planted and harvested by hand.
Onions: 100 acres
Onions are grown on organic muck soil. We plant directly from seed and from transplants, and are yellow and red varieties. Onions are packed and marketed by a neighboring farm, G. Mortellaro & Sons, Inc.
Processing Crops: Peas, Snap Bean, Spinach
Peas, snap beans and spinach at CY Farms are grown to be processed as a frozen product. Farm Fresh First helps coordinate planting and harvesting, and product is processed by Bondouelle or Seneca Foods.
Malting Barley: 40 acres
CY Farms has begun growing malting barley. Our 2-row barley gets sold to local malt houses, like New York Craft Malt, and distillers. Malting barley acreage is growing in New York.
